Striker Vivianne Miedema is set for “several weeks” on the sidelines after undergoing “minor knee surgery”, says her Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall.
She started their defeat by Spain last Friday, but Eidevall said “she would have needed the surgery anyway”.
Women’s Super League record goalscorer Miedema only returned from an anterior cruciate ligament injury in October.
Eidevall said: “She didn’t need the surgery because of the 45 minutes she played against Spain.
“It was nothing that the Dutch team did that complicated this or made the situation worse, it was a situation that needed to be fixed anyway.”
There is some positive injury news for Arsenal, however, with Eidevall saying that England captain Leah Williamson is “very much in contention” for Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham.
Williamson, who also recently returned from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, had to pull out of England’s February matches with a hamstring issue.
