Fulham moved into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup for the first time since 2004-05 with a convincing win at Championship high-flyers Ipswich Town.
Harry Wilson put Fulham ahead in the ninth minute when he collected Bobby de Cordova-Reid’s pass and took it around advancing goalkeeper Christian Walton.
The visitors hit the woodwork twice before they made it 2-0 as Wilson’s low cross was finished by Rodrigo Muniz.
Tom Cairney added a third, but Elkan Baggott headed in a late consolation.
Fulham have an away tie again in the last eight as they take on fellow Premier League side Everton, in a match that will be played in the week commencing 18 December, 2023.
Fulham too good for hosts
Ipswich, second in the Championship, changed their entire starting 11 from the side that beat Plymouth 3-2, while Fulham made eight changes from the team that began the 1-1 draw with Brighton at the weekend.
Walton was making his first appearance of the season following a foot injury but dashed out of his penalty area and saw Wilson take the ball around him before slotting into an unguarded net to give the visitors an early lead.
Marco Silva’s team, 14th in the Premier League, were the better side throughout and Fode Ballo-Toure’s deflected cross hit the crossbar before Walton got lucky when he fumbled Calvin Bassey’s shot, but the ball bounced off the post.
Town had won their last six home matches but fell further behind early in the second half, with Wilson’s deflected cross converted by Muniz at the back post.
Ipswich had fought back from two goals down to beat Wolves 3-2 in the third round but could not do the same again at Portman Road.
Cairney stretched Fulham’s advantage with a low strike from the edge of the penalty area with De Cordova-Reid getting his second assist of the evening.
The Suffolk side had scored in 31 games in a row and they extended that streak when substitute Baggott headed in from Jack Taylor’s corner from the left, but that did not prove the spark for a fightback as Fulham eased through.
The Cottagers also reached the last eight of the competition in 1967-68, 1970-71, 1999-00, 2000-01 and 2004-05 but lost at that stage on every occasion and have never made the semi-finals.
