Jersey suffered their first defeat in the European Division Two qualifier for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup with a nine-wicket loss to Germany.
But they rallied to cruise past bottom side Turkey by nine wickets in their second game on Tuesday at Grainville.
The results, after Monday’s opening win over Italy, mean Jersey are level with the Germans at the top of the pool.
The top two sides in the six-team tournament will win promotion to Europe Division One later this year.
Annalise Merritt and Grace Wetherall’s seventh-wicket stand of 101 helped Jersey recover from a dreadful start as they progressed from 20-6 to 121-6 against Germany.
The Germans raced through Jersey’s top order as their captain Anuradha Doddaballapur took 3-12 while Emma Bargna claimed 2-9 as none of the islanders’ first five batters scored more than five runs.
But with Jersey staring at a heavy defeat, Merritt and Wetherall steadied the innings with a superb 67-ball partnership of 101 to guide Jersey to a defendable target.
Wetherall’s 57 not out came from 40 balls and included nine fours and a six, while Merritt hit six sixes in her 35-ball unbeaten knock of 45.
In reply, Jersey skipper Chloe Greechan took opener Anne Bierwisch’s wicket for four at the end of the fifth over.
But her fellow opener – Warwickshire batter Christina Gough – and Doddaballapur came together to establish what proved to be a game-winning partnership of 97.
The Germans were behind the run rate until the 16th over when they hit 13 off Erin Duffy, before scoring nine off Elise Merritt’s 17th over to leave them needing 14 off the final 18 balls.
Gough’s 69-ball 70 not out, including 11 fours, was the backbone of the innings as Doddaballapur chipped in with an unbeaten 38 off 31 balls to steer Germany to 122-1 in 18.4 overs.
Big win maintains run rate
Having seen Turkey suffer 10-wicket losses to Sweden and Germany already, Jersey knew that a big win was needed over the event’s bottom side after their defeat earlier on Tuesday.
The islanders won the toss and elected to bowl with Turkey struggling from the outset to make headway.
Skipper Bercu Taylan made it into double figures with 11 from 20 balls, but once her third-wicket stand of 16 with Kubra Canavarci ended, Jersey’s bowlers took full control.
Hatice Okcu was the only other player to hit more than five runs with an unbeaten 12 as Turkey were bowled out for 52 in 18.5 overs.
Erin Gouge led the Jersey attack with 3-6 while Greechan took 2-3, Flo Copley 2-13 and Erin Duffy 2-15.
In reply, Charlotte Miles made 23 before being trapped lbw by Goksu Ayan – the first wicket Turkey had taken in three games at the tournament.
But Maria da Rocha (nine not out) and Wetherall (12 not out) steered Jersey to 54-1 in just six overs.
